THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME KUDAT
In the past,
Kudat was better known locally as "Tanjong Berungus" and sometimes
also called "Tambarungan". During the early arrival of Chinese
traders at Tanjung Berungus, they were surprised to see a kind of grass growing
everywhere. The desperation forced them to know it from locals comprising the
Rungus tribe (the native inhabitants of the Kudat district) who later told that
the grass that became their name among them was "Kutad" which meant
"weed grass" in the Rungus language.
Since the "Kutad" of the Chinese
traders was inaccurate, the name "Kudat" was originally from the
weeds (Kutad) where the grassed area was finally the center of the meeting of
immigrant traders with local people to carry out activities Traditionally
traded and trading businesses.
While the
story from the Binadan Kudat tribe was originally from the word "takkudad
aku" which meant "Surprised by me" by one of the tribes concerned
with the sound of a ship named "SANTI" as they sailed from
Limau-Limauan to Tanjung Berungus. The event gave them an idea and agreed to
name Tanjung Berungus as CUDAT.
