MAKING OF GONG KG SUMANGKAP KUDAT
SABAH
Kg Sumang
Kudat is a village located in the Matunggong Small District, Kudat Sabah,
approximately 160km from Kota Kinabalu Sabah and 35km from Kudat City, Sabah.
The majority
of the population is from the Rungus Tribe and runs the economic source of
producing gong-based crafts, farming and other jobs.
Kampung
Sumangkap is well known for its Gong based craft product enthusiasts, as in
this village there are about 35 active craft operators producing full-time gong
products and making the industry a major source of income.
Malaysia's Kraftangan Development
Corporation as the leader in Malaysian craft has helped entrepreneurs in this
village in terms of equipment, materials and promotion. It is the state agency
under the Ministry of Rural (KPLB) to provide the employers' workshop
infrastructure. In addition to these two agencies there are also assistance
from other agencies such as Sabah Tourism Board, Matunggong Small District
Office and other agencies and private sector.
The Travel Agency has also
boosted the production of handicrafts in Kampung Sumangkap as tourist buses are
almost daily visiting this village. It can be said that Kampung Sumangkap has
become one of the driving forces of Tourism activities in Kudat District as
well as the Simpang Mengayau and other tourism activities in the District.
There is the largest Gong in the
Village which was built by Mendiang Raimond angkap in 2007. About 18 feet,
built with zinc sheets of 50 units. In line with the 50th anniversary of the
Independence Day. However Gong has not been recognized by Malaysian and World
Book Of Record as the largest Gog in Malaysia and the World.
